Kinesthetic
Teaching

Picture
(0.5 to 1 day)

Did you know that even just 60 seconds of movement can increase the blood flow to your brain by up to 15%? Modern researches have now revealed that mental and physical health are very much interconnected, that even the book “Brain Rules” by John Medina called it rule number 1: EXERCISE BOOSTS BRAIN POWER.

The human body is designed to move. When we exercise, we improve our executive functions – problem solving, maintaining focus, and inhibiting emotional impulses, just to name a few. The problem with traditional classroom teaching is that it forces the students to sit still and are expected to absorb the lesson that the teacher discusses – or worse, READ – in class!

Kinesiology is the science of movement, and it is now being recognized as a teaching “genre”. Incorporating movement or kinesthetic activities in class allows the students to be more engaged… for the simple reason that their body is involved in the lesson. However, teachers should not simply make the students move. They must move WITH PURPOSE.

This workshop introduces the teacher to a 6-level framework for integrating kinesthetic activities in class. Their creativity will be stretched as they will come up with their own set of kinesthetic activities that they will commit to implementing in their class.

OBJECTIVES:
  • Understand and articulate how learning is stimulated in the brain
  • Learn the 6-level framework for integrating kinesthetic activities in the classroom
  • Prepare a plan to implement movement in class
